چکیده

BACKGROUND The scarcity of water supply in many arid regions, combined with the need for disposal of large volumes of wastewater, has led to an increased use of recycled water for landscape irrigation. Although this practice has been employed for decades in many parts of the world, public health officials recently have begun to express concerns about the potential for wastewater-derived trace contaminants to contaminate potable water supplies. The trace contaminants in recycled wastewater include steroid hormones, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and chlorination byproducts such as Nnitrosodimethylamine or NDMA. Known for its high cancer potency, NDMA is detected frequently in municipal wastewater effluent at concentrations up to 1000 parts per trillion (ppt), including at a number of wastewater treatment plants in California. California Department of Health Services (CDHS) has set a reporting level of only 10 ppt for NDMA. As a result of such stringent guidelines, reuse of wastewater is being scrutinized for potential to introduce NDMA into groundwater, particularly through practices such as use of recycled wastewater for groundwater recharge and landscape irrigation.

Leaching risk of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in soil receiving reclaimed wastewater.

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a potential carcinogen frequently found in treated wastewater as a byproduct of chlorination. The potential for NDMA to contaminate the groundwater is a significant concern. A solute fate and transport model, Hydrus-1D, was used to evaluate the leaching potential of NDMA under different irrigation practices and soil properties. The results indicate that the risk...

Monitoring sugar beet rooting depth irrigated with recycled waste water and different irrigation methods for water savings in an arid climate

ABSTRACT- A detailed understanding of crop rooting systems will facilitate water use reduction, optimized nutrient uptake and irrigation scheduling more efficiently. A field experiment was conducted during 2005-2006 to investigate sugar beet rooting depth growth, irrigated with three irrigation methods (subsurface drip, surface drip and furrow) and two water qualities (recycled wastewater: EC= ...

Experimental Assessment of Recycled Diesel Spill-Contaminated Domestic Wastewater Treated by Reed Beds for Irrigation of Sweet Peppers

The aim of this experimental study is to assess if urban wastewater treated by ten different greenhouse-based sustainable wetland systems can be recycled to irrigate Capsicum annuum L. (Sweet Pepper; California Wonder) commercially grown either in compost or sand within a laboratory environment. The design variables were aggregate diameter, contact time, resting time and chemical oxygen demand....

Chloramination techniques to reduce NDMA formation during disinfection

Previous studies modeled NDMA formation during chlorine disinfection as arising from the oxidation of an unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine intermediate formed from the reaction of monochloramine and dimethylamine. However, chlorination of wastewater effluents indicated that this mechanism could not account for a significant portion of the observed NDMA formation. Laboratory studies indicated that...

N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) as a Drinking Water Contaminant: A Review

N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a member of a family of extremely potent carcinogens, the N-nitrosamines. Until recently, concerns about NDMA mainly focused on the presence of NDMA in food, consumer products, and polluted air. However, current concern focuses on NDMA as a drinking water contaminant resulting from reactions occurring during chlorination or via direct industrial contamination. B...
